Apple Partners With Nuance For Voice Recognition Technology In iOS 5 Rather Than Microsoft?

Couple of days back, we reported that Apple was negotiating with Nuance Communications to use its voice recognition technology in iOS 5 – the next generation iOS that will be unveiled at WWDC 2011 next month.
TechCrunch has just reported that they’ve received some more interesting information from their source about Apple’s partnership with Nuance.
According to TechCrunch:

Apple is already using Nuance voice recognition technology in their new data center in North Carolina.
Apple is expected to announce the partnership at WWDC 2011.
Apple may also be running their hardware so that it can process the information faster and also avoid sending data to third party servers.
As rumored earlier, Siri’s artificial intelligence and assistance technology has been “deeply integrated” into iOS 5.

We won’t be surprised if Apple partners with Nuance for the voice recognition technology that drives Siri’s personal assistant iPhone app as it is a leader in this space and also holds wide range of patents. It makes a lot more sense than buying the company, which currently has a market cap of $6.5 billion.

TechCrunch also reports that Microsoft was pushing Apple to use its voice recognition technology:

one anonymous tipster who correctly knew other information about the two companies tells us that Microsoft had been pushing Apple hard to use their own voice recognition technology in iOS. That attempt was rebuffed, apparently. It will be Nuance all the way.

We’ve also heard that iOS 5 will be heavily built around the cloud and expected to include features like digital music locker that might be dubbed iCloud.
As of now, based on the rumors and speculations, iOS 5 will be all about the cloud and voice recognition technology. It looks like the day when we can tell our iPhone to give us directions to an empty parking spot in the area isn’t too far away (a combination of iOS 5′s speech recognition technology, turn-by-turn navigation apps like Navigon’s MobileNavigator, TomTom and apps like SFpark that allow iPhone users in San Francisco to find an empty parking spot). Voice recognition technology deeply integrated in iOS 5 will also make it a lot safer for such use cases as users won’t have to focus on the iPhone while driving.

Droplist is a Fantastic List Maker with DropBox Support

There are 2 reasons why I like using a list maker on myiPhone. The first is because I am notoriously forgetful. Sometimes I have so much going on that I forget to do things if I don’t have them written down, or set in a reminder in my calendar.
The second reason is that I like to stay organized. While most list makers are kind of overkill for me, I was persistent on finding one that met my needs functionality wise, with a sharp user interface. After loads of searching, I finally came across Droplist…I wanted an application that would open quickly and give me the immediate options to create, edit, and delete lists. Droplist definitely meets those requirements, as there is no splash screen or confusing menus to sift through.
Once installed, you simply open up the application, and you are presented with an extremely simple interface. The main screen is called the Corkboard, which is where you can view and edit all of your previously made lists. There is also a button in the top right hand corner to allow you to create a new task.

The controls are very Apple-like, making the app easy to operate. Holding down on a list title or item allows you to edit, and swiping right allows you to delete. You can even choose to have an optional box next to a list item in order to manually check later as you complete the task.

Droplist also supports syncing with your DropBox account, so lists can be shared between your device and your computer. You can also set reminders for your lists, and get notified via the standard push notification system when a task is overdue.
DropList is feature-packed like some of the other options out there. But if you are like me and are looking for a lightweight list maker with a clean interface, this one is definitely top notch. If you haven’t checked it out yet, Droplist can be downloaded from the App Store for $1.99.

QuizBlows: Google Maps apparently hates one Quiznos in Los Angeles

There are plenty of third party iPhone apps dedicated specifically to finding restaurants and stores near your current location, but the built-in “Maps” app still does a plenty serviceable job – most of the time, anyway. Tapping directly into Google Maps, the app allows you to type in something like “restaurant” and get a map showing the locations of surrounding eateries. But the other afternoon, upon finding myself in a strange neighborhood and needing gas, lunch, and a store, the Maps app managed to fail me in increasingly comical increments. And it all culminated with a restaurant which, according to Google, is known asQuizBLoWs.
I knew I was in trouble when I used the Maps app to determine whether a restaurant I’d spotted on the way in was within walking distance of my location. I’d guessed it was no more than about a quarter to a half a mile, so should I hoof it or should I be lazy and drive? The Maps app was all too happy to show me how to walk there: go north for a mile, cross the railroad tracks, go west for a half a mile, come back south across the railroad tracks, turn back toward my original destination and walk down Interstate 5 for awhile, and 2.4 miles of hoofing it later I’d be at the restaurant which was indeed about a quarter mile away:

Remembering I needed to stop for gas anyway, I drove. After lunch, the fun began. “I need to find a convenience store,” I thought. So I typed “store” into the Maps app and, sure enough, it found me several. From 7-Eleven to Starbucks, the app cheerfully showed me every kind of “store” it could come up with. Then I noticed it had also suggested a place which it referred to as QuizBLoWS. That alone made me curious enough to drive by the place, which turned out to be a standard fare Quiznos restaurant. Wow. Talk about pissing someone off, whether it be a rogue Google employee or some random hacker with a grudge who managed to hack Google Maps just a bit. Best I can tell this is the only Quiznos location to have been labeled with this comically derogative moniker, and it’s repeatable simply by typing “QuizBLoWs” into the Maps app on your iPhone or on maps.google.com on your computer. You have to wonder if those guys running that particular store even know what hit them. How many passersby are not eating there because it’s labeled that way in Maps? Then again, the only reason I did drive by the place was because of the way it was labeled. Of course I didn’t eat there, either.

Oh, and as far as finding gas? Typing “gas” into the Maps app, I was helpfully steered toward one name-brand gas station only to arrive and see that there was another name brand gas station on the other corner of the intersection. You have to wonder how one made it into Google Maps under “gas” and the other didn’t. On the other hand, I may have simply been visiting the worst-mapped neighborhood on the entire Google Maps planet. It happens. Google Maps is still the best online mapping service out there in my experience (anyone remember the comically awful days of having to rely on Mapquest?), but experiences like this only serve to show the challenges faced by manually attempting to map the globe and the kinds of things which can be omitted, mis-mapped, or comically mislabeled in the process.

If you have been searching the internet looking for iPhone 5 pictures you have probably been disappointed. There are no official pictures of the new iPhone 5 yet and according to the latest rumors Apple are actually working on three different prototypes. One of the prototypes is said to be very similar to the iPhone 4 whilst another is said to contain a slide out keyboard.
Most people have stated that they don’t expect to see any radical changes being made to how the iPhone5 will look from the outside especially when you consider the fact that Apple has hardly changed the design of the iPhone from the original to the 3G or the 3GS. The iPhone 4 did see a few changes what with the retina display which has proved to be a massive success.

If you do look for iPhone 5 pictures you are probably just going to see photoshop creations or pictures of the current iphone 5. There are some pictures of the iPhone 5 circulating the internet and the one of the iPhone 5 prototype with the slide out keyboard does look really impressive. Again this is not an official Apple iphone 5 picture so we really can’t say for sure if it is the real thing or not. I’m sure as June gets even closer there will be plenty of iPhone 5 pictures released and you will be able to see what the new iPhone 5 is going to look like.
When it comes to iPhone 5 pictures and ones that you really can trust you are better off waiting for Apple to release them. At least then you will know that these are iPhone 5 pictures and you will know exactly what to expect when this next generation iPhone is released.
